Commuters and residents in Cornelius can expect to soon see significant changes at a key intersection, with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) setting the stage for a major road improvement project. A $21 million contract has been awarded to Ohio-based KWest Group LLC, as confirmed by an NCDOT press release, which will overhaul the junction of W. Catawba Avenue and Torrence Chapel Road/Liverpool Parkway.
The initiative will introduce a reduced conflict intersection design, aiming to increase safety and efficiencies by rerouting left turns from Liverpool Parkway and Torrence Chapel Road through newly constructed roundabouts. KWest Group is scheduled to "begin working as soon as Jan. 5, 2026," and the efforts are to conclude, apart from landscaping, by spring 2028, as per NCDOT. This is a developmental stride meant to seamlessly augment the flow of traffic and diminish travel times for those navigating this busy region.
Further alterations include a new roundabout at the Knox Road/Torrence Chapel Road intersection and a realignment of Knox Road, enabling a direct connection to the traffic signal at Catawba Avenue and One Norman Boulevard. These modifications are part of an ongoing commitment by the NCDOT to modernize infrastructure and cater to the growing demands of transportation within the town of Cornelius and surrounding areas.
Drivers and residents alike can anticipate, as stated in the NCDOT announcement, "All work except landscaping and vegetation establishment should be completed in the spring of 2028."
