It’s a bit of good news for small business owners in Dallas’s City Council District 7, as the City Council has just given the nod to a new Exterior Improvement Grant Program aimed at sprucing up commercial properties. The program, designed to reimburse owners for certain types of external upgrades, will be backed by $796,875 in discretionary bond funds. According to a recent announcement received by the City of Dallas, Councilmember Adam Bazaldua expressed optimism about the initiative's ability to "upgrade their exterior spaces, create more inviting storefronts, and contribute to a more vibrant and attractive business community."
The new grant program targets a variety of eligible capital expenditures to stimulate growth and commercial activity within the district, spurring upgrades in building facades, hardscaping, and energy efficiency enhancements. The effort is non-ambiguous in its exclusion of routine maintenance costs. Examples of eligible projects include substantial façade improvements, new fencing, murals, and environmental efficiency overhauls.
Grant fund distribution will be on a reimbursement basis, with a maximum sum of $50,000 available for the taking. Small projects up to $25,000 can recover up to 80% of the costs, mid-size ventures could reclaim 70% for projects costing between $25,001 and $50,000, and for anything grander, up to 50% of the cost—capped at the maximum grant amount—will be reimbursed.
