The City of Dearborn is taking a data-driven approach to gun safety, with the Department of Public Health securing a $101,570 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This funding boost is aimed at promoting responsible gun ownership, and tackling both unintentional, and intentional firearm-related injuries in the community, according to the City of Dearborn.
As part of a citywide move to prioritize public safety, Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud emphasized the importance of this initiative, "Firearm injury prevention is a public health and safety priority, reinforced by our Health in All Policies approach," as he stated in the City of Dearborn recent announcement. Ali Abazeed, Chief Public Health Officer, echoed this sentiment, explaining that "Public health has a responsibility to intervene upstream, before injuries happen." The grant will fund community outreach, the distribution of firearm safety kits, which include gun locks and lockboxes, and the spreading of educational materials.
This collaborative project harnesses the capabilities of different sectors within the city. The Department of Public Health will work closely with the Dearborn Police Department and other key stakeholders on the initiative. It aims to enforce the idea that firearm safety isn't just about law enforcement but also involves education and community participation. Chief of the Dearborn Police Department, Issa Shahin, noted in a statement that working together is crucial, saying, "Firearm safety is a shared responsibility, and building trust through education and safe storage is essential to keeping our community safe," as stated by the City of Dearborn.

Sara Elhasan, Public Health Advisor, highlighted the impact of investing in fellows such as Julia Ginter-Berriman, whose work "directly informed and strengthened this grant proposal."
