As cities across the nation tune into the spirit of giving, the Denver Police Department is highlighting the role of its Outreach Case Coordinator (OCC) Program in bolstering community support. A recent social media post by the department details the efforts made this Thanksgiving to aid local families in need, providing nourishment and care that goes beyond the typical scope of law enforcement.
Launched in the summer of 2020, the OCC has significantly influenced the way police interact with the Denver community. According to a Facebook post from the Denver Police Department, "the OCC team has helped hundreds of individuals and families navigate challenges with care, dignity, and lasting support." This Thanksgiving, 22 families recently assisted by the OCC were identified for additional help, ensuring they did not miss the warmth of the seasonal traditions due to their hardships.
Going the extra mile, the OCC team, funded by the Denver Police Foundation and a munificent community member, focused on the OCC Program, assisted four families who battle with disabilities that impede the ability to prepare meals by delivering fully prepared, prepaid Thanksgiving dinners right to their doors. The initiative encapsulated the generous spirit this holiday season is known for, providing far more than sustenance but also a sense of inclusion and community support. In total, 19 turkeys and the ingredients for complete holiday meals were shopped for and transported, requiring two cars to deliver them. The community's generous spirit, partnered with the Denver Police Department's outreach initiatives, resulted in these 22 families enjoying not just a meal but a sense of togetherness and community care.
"We’re proud of our Outreach Case Coordinators and grateful for their continued dedication to building trust and providing meaningful support to Denver residents," the Denver Police Department stated in the post. This sentiment echoes the importance of community-oriented policing and the value of addressing root social challenges, a mission that, according to the department, transcends the conventional duties related to law enforcement.
