Delta Air Lines experienced a ground stop at Detroit Metro Airport early morning, which was subsequently lifted shortly before 8 a.m. The Federal Aviation Administration had initially set the ground stop through 7:45 a.m., but then extended it; this temporary halt in flights was due to powerful winter storms causing hazardous travel conditions across the Northeast and Great Lakes areas, including Metro Detroit, which is under a 4Warn Weather Alert with snow squalls and high winds up to 60 mph anticipated, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
According to WXYZ, Delta released a statement indicating that the ground stop, coupled with winter weather across North America, led to numerous delays and cancellations; "Residual impact from winter weather across North America has driven delays and cancels, including gusty winds and frozen precipitation at our DTW hub this morning," Delta explained, also advocating for passengers to utilize the Fly Delta app for updates on their travel and itinerary management. The airline emphasized safety as a top priority while diligently operating the vast majority of its 4,800 scheduled flights across the system.
The stoppage was originally declared at 5:40 a.m. and predominantly affected Delta flights, as noted by an alert on the FAA's National Airspace System Status web page, referenced by FOX 2 Detroit. This was the second consecutive day of interruptions at Detroit Metro Airport, following approximately 15 cancellations and 115 delays for departures, as well as 18 cancellations for inbound flights the previous day.
Facing this recent travel impediment, Detroit Metro Airport and its largest airline, Delta, at the McNamara Terminal, prepared for further challenges as a high wind advisory was in effect until 9 p.m. for all of Southeast Michigan; travelers were faced with the possibility of up to 60 mph wind gusts combined with snowfall, a situation that could worsen throughout the day as cited by FOX 2 Detroit, ultimately highlighting the continuing struggle of balancing the demands of air travel with the unpredictable ferocity of nature.
