Tragedy struck Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood as two men lost their lives to gun violence last night. WPXI reported that the shooting occurred near the intersection of Brownsville Road and Linnview Avenue, where first responders were called to around 5:02 p.m., according to Allegheny County 911 dispatchers.
The victims, identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office as Damien Powell, 27, and Quaziah Jones, 23, were discovered with gunshot wounds in their chest and leg by officers responding to a 12-round ShotSpotter alert. Despite immediate medical attention and full blood transfusions, they were pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital, as WTAE reported.
In the midst of the investigation, law enforcement recovered two firearms from the scene, but the shooter remains at large, having fled on foot down Nobles Lane. According to a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson, Eliza Durham, "The two victims were located on the sidewalk on Linnview avenue both about 10 feet away from each other, so it seemed like it was a close-quarters incident," as obtained by WPXI.
Witnesses have reportedly seen a person in a red jacket fleeing the area, including one account shared by a Carrick Inn patron to WPXI, stating, "That’s what people told me at the Carrick Inn down there. They told me that there was an active shooter up this way, and that’s why all the cops are up this way," according to Carrick local Josh Hoover. Another nearby worker, Dave Kenney, noted the sound of the gunfire, "It was like three, four shots and then a pause and then three-to-four-four shots again," he recalled in his interview.
In the meantime, law enforcement has not yet released a description of the suspect, and the search for answers remains ongoing.
