An early morning fire at a Meyerland apartment complex on Braesvalley Drive left about 50 residents without homes on Thursday. The Houston Fire Department arrived to find an "active evacuation" already underway, and smoke "pushed down on everybody," complicating firefighting efforts amid stormy conditions, according to Click2Houston.
Deputy Chief Brian Sky-Eagle said a lack of working hydrants in the courtyard and a broken street hydrant forced firefighters to stretch hoses about a thousand feet to reach water. The fire spread quickly through three connected buildings due to missing attic dividers, resulting in roofs lost and a wall now bowing outward, signaling structural damage.
A fire at a Houston apartment complex caused no reported injuries. Firefighters and community members helped residents, including older adults, people with disabilities, and those on oxygen, evacuate safely. The Red Cross and a Metro bus provided temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and some apartments are linked to an active arson case. METRO and the Red Cross are assisting displaced residents, as reported by FOX26 Houston.
