An East Kentwood High School art educator, Le Tran, is capturing attention far beyond her classroom walls. Known for her ability to meaningfully connect with students and inspire them to share their art with the wider community, Tran's dedication to teaching has been highlighted in the latest #proudMIeducator video. Her journey in the Kentwood Public Schools began in 2002 and has since been a transformative force, not just in teaching art, but in helping students to also discover and nurture their passions.
In her featured video, Tran emphasizes the importance of art education. "Art is super important," she said, underscoring that it's not merely optional but essential. This belief has driven her to not just educate, but also to passionately advocate for her students' creative growth. Her influence has not gone unnoticed, earning her the title of Michigan Art Education Association (MAEA) Secondary Art Educator of the Year for 2021. It's a passion that was instilled in her by her own teachers upon moving to the United States, recognizing and fostering her talent through high school and into college, per the Michigan Department of Education.
The accolades for Tran didn't stop at the state level. She was also named the 2021 MAEA Art Educator of the Year and received the 2021 National Secondary Art Educator Award by the National Art Education Association. Her commitment transcends the traditional boundaries of the classroom, fostering a space where students feel empowered to create and share. Kim Meyers Baas, Kentwood Public Schools' fine arts coordinator, told the Michigan Department of Education, "She’s very personable and students connect with her."
Since its inception in 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has sought to equally spotlight educators like Tran who share their passion for education and influence the lives of students profoundly. Those interested in viewing the full gallery of these dedicated professionals can find the playlist on the campaign's YouTube page.
