A student at Ecorse Public Schools' Parks Alternative Education Center was found with a firearm in their backpack following an anonymous tip, as stated in a letter sent to parents by Superintendent Josha Talison. The weapon had not been taken out of the bag, and no injuries were reported.
The school faced increased scrutiny after officials confirmed no security guard was on-site during the incident. Talison said the school’s usual safety measures were not in place and stated, “This failure is unacceptable.” He added that a daily security presence will now be required. CBS News Detroit also reported that the district plans to review its safety procedures and consider adding more security measures.
The community shared concerns after a firearm was found at Ecorse High School. Michelle Thomas, a nearby resident, told WXYZ, "It's unsettling, because what about the children. Someone should always be there," and alumnus Damarion Alford described the situation as "It's sad and reckless." The student was expelled, and Ecorse Police are investigating. Parents and students were reminded to use the OK2SAY tip line to report safety concerns anonymously.
