Major League Baseball’s financial landscape continues to be notable, as Edwin Díaz has agreed to a three-year, $69 million contract with the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. A person familiar with the deal who spoke to NY1 on condition of anonymity said Díaz’s signing is pending a physical. The contract will add to the Dodgers' existing deferred payment obligations, which extend through 2046.
Edwin Díaz’s fastball averages 97–98 mph, and his slider has been highly effective. Last season, the Dodgers’ bullpen ranked 21st out of 30 teams with a 4.27 ERA. ABC7NY reports that the team’s bullpen struggles led to Roki Sasaki being moved from a starting role to closing games, a decision considered not ideal for his development.
Edwin Díaz, known for using "Narco" by Blasterjaxx & Timmy Trumpet as his entrance music at Citi Field, is expected to strengthen the Dodgers’ bullpen. Last season with the Mets, he converted 28 of 31 save opportunities and posted a 1.63 ERA, according to NY1.
After missing the 2023 season due to a knee injury sustained during a World Baseball Classic celebration, Edwin Díaz has joined the Dodgers. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ABC7NY that acquiring a high-leverage reliever is beneficial. With relievers such as Tanner Scott and Brusdar Graterol already on the roster, Díaz’s high velocity and strikeout ability are expected to strengthen the bullpen.
The Mets, anticipating Edwin Díaz’s departure, signed Devin Williams to a three-year contract. Díaz chose to leave after three seasons of his five-year deal. Since he declined the Mets’ $22.025 million qualifying offer, the team will receive a compensatory draft pick following the fourth round, as reported by ABC7NY.
