The Elk Grove Police Department received a $340,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to enhance traffic safety and reduce serious injuries and deaths on local roads through September 2026. Funded initiatives include DUI checkpoints, patrols against impaired driving, and high-visibility enforcement of California’s hands-free cell phone law, as reported by the Elk Grove Police Department.
The grant also supports operations targeting dangerous behaviors affecting cyclists and pedestrians, including speeding and failure to yield. In addition to enforcement, programs will provide community education on distracted driving, impaired driving, and bicycle and pedestrian safety, as stated by the Elk Grove Police Department.
According to the Elk Grove Police Department on their Facebook page, the department will use a new grant to work with nearby agencies and provide officer training. The grant covers DUI enforcement training, including Standard Field Sobriety Test, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert certifications. It also supports safety operations and recertification for officers.
