An explosion and subsequent fire tore through a downtown Eustis jewelry store yesterday, leaving one person injured and buildings in the vicinity at risk. Eustis Fire Chief Michael Swanson confirmed the incident during a press conference and stated that one victim was airlifted to the hospital. However, the individual's current medical condition has not yet been disclosed. The WESH report disclosed that the area surrounding the blast site, specifically S. Eustis St., had been littered with debris from the explosion.
Footage from the scene showcased significant damage to the structure, as detailed by WESH, which Swanson remarked "appears to be a total loss." Despite the severity of the incident, the mystery deepens as the building was not known to have active gas lines connecting to it, complicating the investigation's efforts to unravel the cause of the explosion. Found doing road work at the time, officials detected a gas leak, as detailed by Fire Chief Swanson to WFTV, which inadvertently seeped into nearby utility lines, an incident that isn't considered out of the ordinary.
Shortly after containing the leak and preparing to depart, a fireball burst forth from the jewelry store. Tip Tops, a local screen printing shop across the street, captured the moment of explosion on video, showing the blast shattering windows and forcing pedestrians to flee. The property owner, an elderly woman described by neighbors, sustained critical injuries and was immediately cared for by emergency medical services.
Adjacent buildings were not taking any chances, as evacuations were carried out as a preventative measure. While the cause of the explosion seemed initially elusive due to the electrically powered interior of the store and the absence of obvious gas service, Chief Swanson noted that the blast originated from an area used for soldering and welding operations.
The State Fire Marshal's Office has stepped in to thoroughly investigate the cause of the explosion, ensuring a comprehensive inquiry into the unfortunate event.
