A late-night encounter at a South Dallas DART station turned deadly Thursday after a brief verbal exchange on the platform ended with one man shot in the chest and an 18-year-old now in custody on a murder charge, according to police records.
The shooting happened around 9:40 p.m. on the platform at the 8th and Corinth DART station, one stop before the Dallas Zoo, authorities said. The victim was later identified as 28-year-old Erin LaJames Graham, and the suspect as 18-year-old Demetrius Rogers.
DART police told CBS News Texas that the gunfire did not occur on a DART vehicle, but on the station platform itself. According to Dallas County jail records cited by the outlet, Rogers is charged with murder and had no bond set as of Friday morning.
An arrest affidavit for Rogers, as summarized by CBS News Texas, describes a seemingly minor exchange that escalated with tragic speed. Rogers told investigators he said "excuse me" as he walked by, and Graham responded, "excuse you." Rogers allegedly told police he believed his brother and Graham were about to start fighting, and admitted pulling out a gun and shooting Graham in the chest. Graham was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
String of DART Violence Has Riders on Edge
The killing is the latest in a series of violent episodes on and near DART trains that have rattled riders and alarmed transit officials. Earlier reporting by The Dallas Morning News detailed other fatal incidents, including an October attack, that spurred calls for more patrols and additional surveillance in the downtown area.
Regular commuters and nearby business owners told the paper that the drumbeat of shootings has left both daytime and nighttime travelers uneasy, even as investigators work to sort out motives and determine whether any of the incidents are connected.
What Happens Next in the Case
Rogers was booked into the Dallas County jail, where the case will move into the local court system as prosecutors review the file and formalize charges. The Dallas County Sheriff's Office provides an online inmate lookup that shows booking information, bond status and court dates for people held in county custody.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators. More details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through court and officials release additional records.
