World-famous shoe designer Stuart Weitzman recently dropped knowledge on eager ears at The Ohio State University, giving students a crash course in entrepreneurship and innovation. During his visit, which was part of the Fisher College of Business' LeadX: Unplugged series, Weitzman recounted his journey from a son apprenticing in his father's shoe factory to the helm of a global designer brand. According to OSU News, Weitzman emphasized the importance of understanding all business facets and nurturing both creative and entrepreneurial skills.

"I'm a unique example of someone who was the CEO and the creative director, and I didn't have any trouble with both," Weitzman told students at the event. He added, "I hired artistic, creative people. … You can teach a creative person to be an entrepreneur," as reported by OSU News. Weitzman's visit was an anticipated event. The Fisher Interim Dean Aravind Chandrasekaran praised his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. The fashion mogul also underlined the significance of distinctive marketing strategies, sharing anecdotes about his innovative ads that became iconic in their own right.

Julia Cabral, a student pursuing dual degrees in marketing and fashion and retail studies, expressed her admiration for Weitzman's creativity to OSU News, particularly the "Stuart's Dog" advertisement, which aimed to elevate the company's identity rather than individual products. "Another highlight from his presentation was his frequent reminder that 'there's always another way,' which seems simple, but with his 50-plus-year career, has proven true time and time again," she said.

Stuart Weitzman's imprint on the fashion world extends beyond his unique designs and marketing strategies, as he now mentors young minds across the globe. During his discussion at Ohio State, he also touched upon the need for a strong online presence, stating, "In my industry, technology's given us algorithms to study consumer preferences. It's a good deal for fashion." Weitzman explained that despite all the evolving tools and strategies, without a quality product at the core, marketing can only do so much. "If you don't have the product, it doesn't matter what your marketing is," he asserted, according to OSU News. "When you have the product, if you're good at marketing, it's that much better."
