A pre-dawn argument on San Antonio's Far West side ended in deadly gunfire yesterday, and investigators say it started over something as mundane as a car and a cellphone.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar briefed reporters later that day at the downtown sheriff’s headquarters, describing what he called a domestic dispute that spiraled into a homicide. Detectives are still working the case, gathering physical evidence and interviewing witnesses.
According to Fox San Antonio, deputies were called around 6:30 a.m. to the 100 block of Mallow Drive, where they found a 42-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators arrested 36-year-old Courtney Renee Hooper on a murder charge. The sheriff's office said the confrontation centered on a dispute involving a car and a phone. Hooper has told deputies she opened fire in self-defense, according to the briefing.
Salazar delivered his update from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at 200 North Comal Street, the complex that houses his administrative team and serves as the usual backdrop for major-incident press conferences.
What Sheriff Salazar Said
During the briefing, Salazar said Hooper “provided deputies with a video that she thought would exonerate her, but the video just made her look more guilty,” and he described the investigation as “clear cut.”
He added that Hooper's children were inside the home at the time of the shooting and are now in the care of Child Protective Services. Investigators also told reporters they were looking into possible drug-related charges on top of the homicide allegation, according to Fox San Antonio.
Holiday Violence And Local Resources
Salazar noted that this case is one of several recent domestic-related homicides his office has handled and urged families, friends, and neighbors to step in or call for help when they see abuse escalating. Local victim advocates have long warned that the holiday season can crank up stress and conflict inside volatile households, a point emphasized by victim-services leaders in reporting by KSAT.
Hooper was taken to the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. Detectives said they will forward their findings to the district attorney's office as the investigation continues. County officials have not yet released charging documents or a booking photo.
