An apartment fire in Delaware County turned fatal last Saturday as one person was reported dead and seven others injured, including a firefighter. The Llanerch Place Apartments in Upper Darby Township was engulfed in flames early Saturday, as per FOX 29 News. The fire, starting on the second floor, led to around 75 residents being displaced.

Among the chaos, firefighter and civilian injuries were reported. Upper Darby Township Fire Department stated that one victim, after being taken to the hospital, later died, another remains in critical condition, and the other six sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Further, Nick Martin, Fire Chief of Upper Darby Township, revealed to 6abc Action News, "Fires in apartment buildings are exceptionally challenging when the fire is anywhere below the top floor. You have all of the floors above to deal with."

Residents faced harrowing experiences as they had to wait for rescue on their balconies, engulfed by smoke. Raymond Erwin, a resident, recollected to 6abc Action News, "They got us down with the ladders, it was definitely very scary." Meanwhile, Delaware County Emergency Services and support groups including the Red Cross, stepped up to provide assistance. Temporary shelters were established, but were eventually closed as the apartment complex management secured temporary housing for the affected residents.

Stories of close calls and narrow escapes circulated, like that of 7-year-old Faith Arnault who, according to CBS News Philadelphia, said, "I couldn't breathe when I saw the smoke — it was burning a lot." Amidst the widespread smoke and water damage, the fire left many apartments unusable and forced numerous residents to figure out long-term housing solutions, scrambling to pick up the pieces of their lives disrupted without warning.

The investigations led by the UDFD Fire Marshalls, Upper Darby Township Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshalls are ongoing. The cause of the tragic fire is still under investigation, with no immediate insights available.
