Federal authorities say a Las Vegas man turned a routine airport screening into a violent brawl inside Terminal 1 at Harry Reid International Airport earlier this month, attacking Transportation Security Administration officers and then allegedly trying to stab responding police with a pen. Prosecutors have since charged him in federal court, records show, and he has remained in custody while the case moves forward toward a preliminary hearing set for Dec. 8.
Alleged attack at the checkpoint
According to investigative documents, Jhon Vizcaino Ramirez walked up to a TSA screening lane with a bandana covering the lower half of his face and handed over a boarding pass in a woman’s name for a flight to Rochester, New York. When agents asked for his passport, investigators say he refused, and the situation quickly escalated into a physical struggle. Ramirez is accused of hitting a TSA officer, knocking off the officer’s glasses, kicking and fighting with personnel, and grabbing an officer’s pen before allegedly attempting to stab Las Vegas Metro Police officers who rushed to the checkpoint, as reported by 8 News Now.
Where it happened
The confrontation played out in Terminal 1 at Harry Reid International Airport, the main commercial hub serving Las Vegas. The airport’s official site lists the complex at 5757 Wayne Newton Boulevard, just south of the Strip, and identifies Terminal 1 as one of its primary security screening and check-in areas, according to Harry Reid International Airport.
Charges and court dates
Court filings show federal prosecutors opened a case on Nov. 20, charging Ramirez with interference with security screening personnel and entry by false pretenses to a secure area of an airport. A magistrate judge ordered him held in custody at a Nov. 24 federal hearing, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8. Records indicate county prosecutors later closed a separate state case after the federal charges were filed, as per 8 News Now.
Custody and next steps
Metro police initially booked Ramirez on state allegations that included resisting a public officer and battery by a prisoner. Records show he was taken to the Clark County Detention Center in downtown Las Vegas. Public information about the jail, which is located at 330 S. Casino Center Boulevard is available from Clark County.
Why this matters
Incidents that involve violence at checkpoints or attempts to breach secure zones tend to draw fast federal attention because they cut directly into aviation security and public safety at crowded terminals. Ramirez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court, and the upcoming preliminary hearing will determine the next steps in the federal case.
