The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department took to social media this holiday season to honor a former Explorer who has carved a transformative path in local firefighting history, according to a Facebook post detailing the journey of Kayelei Carter. The post highlighted Carter's early inspiration from her father, a commitment to the vigorous training of Explorer Post 722, and her current achievements at the Holly Springs Fire Department.
Kayelei Carter’s story is one of firm resolve and progressing legacy; after her stint with the Explorers from 2015-2016 where she picked up essential firefighting skills, such as rescue drills, and hose management, she chose to follow her father's footsteps, who served as a volunteer firefighter in Connecticut, leading a career lined with community service and breakthroughs, the most notable being her role in forming Wake County's first all-female fire crew in January which made history in the process. Carter's dedication and success stem from the strong foundation at Explorer Post 722, and specific mentorship from figures like Chief Tony Mauldin, as highlighted in the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department's social media post.
Now an Engineer on Engine 2 after beginning as a full-time firefighter in 2017, Carter believes in the value of mentorship and advanced training she received earlier in her career, which was evident as the Facebook post recounted. The post recalled trips to Gatlinburg, TN for competitive training, and the foundational experiences within the Explorer Post 722 that shaped her skills, and her kinship with the fellow Explorers and advisors who collectively formed what she referred to as a 'strong family bond'.
Outside of her duties in fire service, Carter maintains a balance between her profession and her personal life, enjoying hunting, fishing, and travel as well as spending time with family – such diversity in interests underscores the multifaceted nature of modern-day firefighters; they are not just emergency responders but active participants in the fabric of community life. The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department proudly acknowledged Carter's growth and continued representation of Explorer Post 722, emphasizing "We're incredibly proud of all you've accomplished, Kayelei! Thank you for your service and for representing Explorer Post 722 so well!"
