A catastrophic fire engulfed a strip mall in Garden City yesterday, causing significant damage to the building. The blaze, which began around 5:30 p.m., forced the closure of several roadways, including Middlebelt Road between Ford and Warren roads, creating traffic diversions and challenges for residents.
As fire personnel from Garden City, Dearborn Heights, and Inkster worked to control the flames, local officials warned of potential power outages and water quality issues. "Residents in the surrounding area could experience temporary power outages and discolored water," city officials posted on Facebook, a caution echoed across reports by CBS News Detroit. The entirety of the building was consumed by the fire, with dramatic footage showing flames overtaking the structure.
While the cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed, the impact on the strip mall businesses was noted by area news outlets. "All storefronts except one were vacant," police told CBS News Detroit, after initially saying that five businesses were involved. Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported in relation to the incident.
Neighbors familiar with the strip mall offered additional context to the fire's backdrop. One resident, Sandy Makowski, described the scene to ClickOnDetroit: "It was pretty bad. “I mean it was shooting up, I would say at least 10, 15 feet high, smoke everywhere and they’re saying that people might lose power and damage to the water." Furthermore, Sandra Markowski pointed out the state of the mall to FOX 2 Detroit, saying, "The little mini mall, the strip mall, has been abandoned, I'd say five years. They all went out of business, so it's been sitting for about, like I said, five years."
