Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made some decisive moves in shaping the future of healthcare in the state by appointing four new members to the Health Professions Workforce Coordinating Council. On the roster of appointees, we have Clifford Porter, M.D., PhD, Bryan Sisk, DNP, Candice Smith, and Cheletta Watkins, M.D. Each member brings a distinct set of skills and experience to the table, from military backgrounds to executive positions in health care systems.
According to the announcement made by the Governor's office, Clifford Porter, who hails from Austin, is a tenured physician and a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. His service record is notable with a retired Colonel rank from the U.S. Army Reserve, and a blend of medical and academic degrees from universities such as the University of Saskatchewan and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Porter's affiliation with various medical associations and history of volunteerism point to his diverse experience and dedication to medical service.
Bryan Sisk carries the torch for nursing leadership as the chief nurse executive at the Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston. A 20-year veteran, Sisk's military service is only a portion of his commitment to health care, as he also contributes to numerous nursing associations and founded an endowment supporting veterans, as reported by the Governor's office. His academic credentials span from Arkansas Tech University to Texas A&M University, culminating with a Doctor of Nursing from Northern Kentucky University.
With the inclusion of Candice Smith in the council, there's a focus on regional health care representation, too. Smith, the CEO of Deaf Smith County Hospital District, is recognized for her leadership skills and active participation in various committees such as GETAC and the Emergency Medical Task Force. Her accolades also include board memberships in local community services and an advanced educational background with a specialization in Nursing Administration from the University of Phoenix and a certification from the National Rural Hospital Association.
Cheletta Watkins, coming from Forney, steps in with an extensive background in family medicine and a prevailing position as Executive Medical Director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Her involvement with the American Board of Family Medicine, Texas Medical Association, and the Dallas County Medical Society underlines a commitment to advancing medical standards and collaboration, as per the Governor's office. Her educational path is deeply rooted in Texas, with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin and later achieving her Doctor of Medicine from The UT Medical Branch at Galveston.
