In the late hours of Friday, a Harris County deputy swiftly acted to rescue a woman from a fiery wreck on I-45 South. Deputy Daniel Lozano of Constable Precinct 8 was driving to assist with an unrelated traffic stop when he encountered an overturned vehicle ablaze beneath the Scarsdale Boulevard overpass. On the scene, Lozano found a woman trapped inside, calling out for help as the flames spread, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Bodycam footage captured Deputy Lozano's urgent approach toward the vehicle while the surrounding traffic continued to move. The dashboard was alight with flames, which were also visible under the hood, close to the windshield. Reporting from FOX 26 Houston detailed how Lozano had to repeatedly strike the window with his baton before successfully breaking it open. "She starts screaming. I knock on the window — I’m trying to break it to get her out," Lozano said. "I see the flames. It won’t break, won’t break. I have to hit it a couple more times — that’s when I finally manage to smash the window open with my baton."
Once the window was breached, the deputy instructed the woman to place her arms around his neck, and he carefully extricated her from the vehicular inferno. As the smoke and flames intensified, it became a race against time. The woman, who had suffered burns, was quickly transported to the hospital for treatment. The precipitous rescue, capturing Deputy Lozano's quick thinking and action, underscored the imminence of danger and the deputy's resolve to navigate it.
"Deputy Lozano’s actions undoubtedly saved the young woman’s life and we are incredibly proud of his heroic efforts," the constable’s office stated in the Click2Houston, expressing great pride in their deputy's bravery. This sentiment was echoed across the community as the news of Deputy Lozano's daring rescue spread. Having been with Constable Precinct 8 for around two years, Deputy Lozano has exemplified a commitment to service that extends far beyond expected duties. Following the rescue effort, the scene was handed over to the Houston Fire Department, which arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with additional details about the woman’s condition not yet disclosed by officials.
