With the holiday season underway, Hillsborough County Solid Waste is reminding residents to recycle outdated electronics. Their announcement notes that items like televisions, computers, and mobile devices should not be thrown in the trash because they contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury.

For working devices that are no longer needed, residents are encouraged to donate them to local charities, shelters, or thrift stores instead of discarding them. Many electronics retailers also offer free recycling programs, allowing both functional and non-functional devices to be properly recycled and helping reduce e-waste, according to Hillsborough County.

Fire hazards are a concern when batteries are disposed of improperly, especially rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Residents are advised to place each lithium-ion battery in its own plastic bag, tape the terminals, and keep the battery label visible, following the published guidelines. In contrast, single-use alkaline batteries like A, AA, and AAA can be safely placed in regular residential curbside trash.

Residents of Hillsborough County can drop off household electronics at recycling locations, including Community Collection Centers, by showing a photo ID. Facilities such as Alderman’s Ford and Hillsborough Heights Solid Waste make recycling convenient, though they are closed today and on January 1, 2026.

In addition to electronics, these centers accept other items such as appliances, furniture, and tires. A property tax bill showing the Hillsborough County Solid Waste Disposal Assessment, along with a photo ID, is required for drop-off. Smaller appliances, like toasters and hair dryers, can be placed in regular weekly trash collection. Residents can find more information on the Find a Waste Disposal Facility page.
