Hillsborough County's Sunshine Line transportation service has cruised past a major milestone, hitting more than 1 million miles traveled in 2025. The figure is a testament to the service's growth since its inception in 1990, marking one of the County's most significant infrastructure growth spurts. The Sunshine Line is known for its commitment to the community, providing transportation to aging and disabled residents, and more recently, to those without a home or otherwise in need of a ride.

The achievement reflects the importance of the service in a quantifiable measure; it's like saying the fleet has driven to the moon and back four times, if one were to seek an analogy. But the Sunshine Line's real triumph perhaps lies in the sheer number of trips provided in the last year. According to a Hillsborough County press release, there were 1,093,721 trips made across three programs, with its Door-to-Door and Bus Pass programs accounting for over half a million of those trips.

In addition to hitting the seven-figure mileage mark, the Sunshine Line has brought its safety ratings to some of their highest levels ever, boasting a record of fewer than one accident per 100,000 miles driven. As they rolled out 16 new buses equipped with innovative technology this year, customer service and safety have continued to be a high priority, a commitment that doesn't seem to be slowing down.

But it's not just about the numbers. "Drivers go above and beyond for residents, forming genuine relationships with their riders," said the county's statement. Moreover, more than half of the drivers achieved an on-time accuracy rate of 90% or greater, showing their commitment to punctuality.
