Hawai‘i Island police are actively investigating a burglary at a home on the 1400 block of Kaumana Drive in Hilo, which was reported to have occurred between August 19 and August 20, as the house was tented for termite fumigation. According to the homeowner, thieves made off with two rifles—a black DPMS AR-15 and a camouflage-print CVA V2 muzzleloader—from a storage room. This information comes directly from a news release by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
While the home was seemingly being made safer from the insects that quietly undermine foundations, it was forcefully entered into, leading to a stark reminder from law enforcement. The police have advised that in preparation for fumigation, it is crucial to remove to safely secure elsewhere all valuables including cash, jewelry, and firearms. This advice aims to prevent such incidents from giving anyone an unwarranted opportunity to exploit a residence's temporary vulnerability.
The local authorities are urging anyone with information about this particular burglary to step forward. Detective Amy Omaya of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section can be contacted directly at (808) 961-2381 or via email at [email protected]. Additionally, information can be submitted through the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.
