A fatal crash on the 5900 block of Eastex Freeway took the life of 21-year-old Ricardo Herrera in the early hours of Sunday. The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division is currently investigating the incident, which occurred around 2 a.m., resulting in three other passengers sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, identified as Herrera, was southbound in a gray Infiniti Q50 on the Eastex Freeway when the accident happened, according to the City of Houston's news release. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle while exiting onto the 610 westbound ramp. The car began to veer off the roadway after failing to maintain a single lane and eventually went airborne as it drove onto a large dirt pile, before striking a tree.
At the crash site, the response from the Houston Fire Department paramedics was swift, but despite their efforts, Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three occupants were hurled from the vehicle upon impact. They were quickly transported to a local hospital, where they received medical attention for injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
The specifics of the crash are being pieced together by Sergeant M. Barrow and Officer A. Thomas of the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division. In a statement released to the public, more details about the contributing factors to the crash, or the condition of the driver at the time of the incident, have yet to be disclosed, and the investigation remains open, as mentioned in the same news release.
