The Harris County Democratic Party plans to withhold endorsements from Houston Mayor John Whitmire after he participated in a fundraiser for Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw. Party leaders, expressing discontent over Whitmire’s actions, pushed the resolution, which has received public support from Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. Hidalgo encouraged precinct chairs on Facebook to approve the measure and not be intimidated into silence, according to Houston Chronicle.
Mayor Whitmire responded to recent events by asserting, "I will continue to fight for Houstonians and work with colleagues across the political spectrum to deliver results," as reported by KHOU. He defended his record and emphasized the nonpartisan nature of his office, gaining support from figures like U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher and state Sen. Carol Alvarado, who signed a letter urging party unity.
Tensions within Harris County’s Democratic Party have emerged, with Whitmire and Hidalgo clashing publicly over flood responses and social media exchanges. The situation reflects broader debates about party loyalty and the challenges of bipartisan collaboration in a polarized political environment.
