The fate of the iconic Astrodome, once dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World," is uncertain as Harris County considers either a $752.6 million renovation or a $55 million demolition. Renovation would restore basic functionality with updates to plumbing and HVAC systems, but full historic preservation or modern venue upgrades are not included, according to Click2Houston,
Interim County Administrator Jesse Dickerman noted, "These cost estimates illustrate that it will not be financially feasible for Harris County to renovate the Astrodome without significant private investment," as reported by KHOU. Demolition would clear the structure while leaving the underground portion intact, presenting a lower but still substantial cost, with neither option enabling major sporting events in the near future.
The Astrodome, located in NRG Park, is currently closed, with its certificate of occupancy revoked since 2009 and the last event held nearly 25 years ago. Any future plans will involve the Houston Texans, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the community, and approval from the Texas Historical Commission because of its status as a State Antiquities Landmark. No timeline for a decision has been announced.
