The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is currently leading an inquiry into a fatal police shooting incident in Essex, Baltimore County. As reported by Fox Baltimore, the situation unfolded when officers responded to a 911 disturbance call on the evening of December 3 that escalated into an officer-involved shooting. The call, which came in around 8:30 p.m., initially reported a stabbing at a residence located on the 900 block of Holgate Drive.
Upon reaching the scene, the responding officers encountered Howard Sye, a 31-year-old man who was wielding a knife inside an apartment building. According to WBAL-TV, family members identified the man as Sye, an unemployed auto mechanic who lived at the apartment with his sister. The police engagement resulted in multiple officers discharging their firearms, ultimately leading to Sye's death. A woman with stab wounds was discovered at the location and received immediate hospital treatment, as did one injured officer. A knife was also recovered from the scene.
The IID has stated they plan to release the names of the deceased and the officers involved within two business days of the incident, a period that could be extended if necessary. Moreover, officers at the scene had been equipped with body-worn cameras, the footage from which is expected to be disclosed publicly within 20 business days, barring any investigative or technical delays. The community has been urged to offer any relevant information to the IID at (410) 576-7070 or through email at [email protected].
