The Ionia Public Schools community is mourning the loss of Douglas R. Welch High School principal Jason Little, who was found dead on December 3 in a school building. Superintendent Ben Gurk confirmed the educator's death, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by many. "He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having positively impacted countless students, colleagues, and members of our community. I personally was blessed to be able to count on him as a trusted friend," Gurk said in a communication to district members, reported by WOODTV. Ionia High School, Welch High School, and the Bulldog Beginnings Preschool closed temporarily following the tragic event.
Little’s role as an educator and his influence on the students he served were consistently noted across multiple sources. The Detroit News captured Gurk's sentiments, expressing that "I personally was blessed to be able to count on him as a trusted friend." The death investigation, led by the Ionia Department of Public Safety, is ongoing. However, officials were quick to assure the public that they do not believe there is any threat to the community.
The outpouring of support following the news of Little’s death has been substantial, according to reports. Besides utilizing its counselors and comfort dog, the district has received contributions from nearby communities and organizations detailed by Gurk in an email quoted by The Detroit News, including "Saranac Community Schools, and the local Meijer" providing food, and "Lowell Area Schools, Greenville Public Schools, and Okemos Public Schools" contributing support staff and therapy dogs to help those grieving.
As a testament to his impact on the community, a GoFundMe page was established to assist Little's family. According to the fundraiser's organizer, Deanna McDermott, Little was "He impacted the lives of many students in Ionia Public Schools as a history and social studies teacher and the Principal of Douglas R. Welch High School. He dedicated his career to ensuring that every student had the chance to succeed." The sentiment echoes throughout the description detailing how he dedicated his career to his students' success, as per MLive. The campaign has raised significant funds towards its goal, intended to support Little's wife, Ashley, and their children during this difficult period.
Little's funeral service took place at Shiloh Community Church in Orleans, with an obituary from Lake Funeral Home paying homage to a "devoted husband, loving father, and beloved son and brother," as reported by The Detroit News. The schools he served deeply feel his loss, and as Gurk stated, the school community will "continue to support each other and move forward together in a manner that honors Principal Jason Little's legacy."
