An officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville's Oceanway area on Monday evening has ended in a fatality, marking the 17th such incident this year for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO). Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker provided details of the event, which unfolded around 6:30 p.m. on Ponce Boulevard, just off New Berlin Road. Task Force officers from District 6 were in pursuit of a suspect involved in a stolen car case and several business burglaries when they identified and apprehended the individual as a passenger in a vehicle.
As the officers conducted the traffic stop, a struggle ensued between another officer and the vehicle's driver. The situation escalated when the driver, whose identity has yet to be released, produced a gun during the altercation. In response, Officer Zachary Jennings fired a shot that struck the driver in the head, leading to the driver's death. According to details shared by the JSO, the driver had not complied with the officer and initiated the physical confrontation.
The State Attorney’s Office has arrived on the scene and is actively conducting its own investigation into the shooting. Following its completion, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will then carry out its own internal review of the incident and Officer Jennings' actions.
This latest officer-involved shooting adds to an already growing tally for the JSO this year. The frequency of such violent encounters has drawn attention and concern from within the community and advocacy groups seeking to understand the circumstances that lead to these critical moments — all in search of ways to prevent future occurrences. The authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation will run its course, with the officer involved temporarily assigned to administrative duties per standard protocol.
