The Department of Justice is suing Nevada, along with Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Fulton County in Georgia, for failing to provide statewide voter registration lists requested earlier this year. "States have the statutory duty to preserve and protect their constituents from vote dilution," Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said, citing violations of federal election laws including the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act, as per News 3 LV.
"At this Department of Justice, we will not permit states to jeopardize the integrity and effectiveness of elections by refusing to abide by our federal elections laws. If states will not fulfill their duty to protect the integrity of the ballot, we will," Dhillon added, emphasizing the DOJ’s commitment to enforcing compliance. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, who has said he would follow federal orders, is involved in a dispute over the state’s refusal to submit voter registration lists due to concerns about sensitive data like social security numbers.
Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar told FOX5 Vegas, "While very few allegations result in actual violations of election law when investigated, educating the public on the investigative process will help clear up misconceptions and increase confidence in Nevada’s safe and secure elections." The issue comes after former President Trump made claims about the 2020 election, and in 2021, former Secretary of State Barbara Cegaske said her office found no evidence of widespread voter fraud.
