Recycling Christmas trees keeps organic material out of landfills, conserves water, and benefits the community. According to the City of Las Vegas, recycled trees are turned into mulch that retains soil moisture, improves plant health, and supports public landscaping, including dust control.
Las Vegas Valley residents can recycle trees at more than 30 free drop-off locations across Southern Nevada from Friday through Jan. 15. Trees should be stripped of lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, and nails. Flocked trees are not accepted because their chemical coatings can contaminate mulch and damage equipment.
Residents unable to drop off their trees can use Move It’s pickup and recycling service for $25.99. Details are available on their website or app. Free mulch is also available for yards or gardens, with pickup times and locations provided by the City of Henderson and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
Christmas tree recycling benefits both the community and the environment. According to the City of Las Vegas, last year alone, the program saved 1,560 cubic yards of landfill space. Since the program began, valley residents’ efforts have had a significant impact on local sustainability.
