The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has recently released body camera footage capturing the chaotic aftermath of a grave 12-vehicle collision at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard in northwest Las Vegas. This devastating incident, which consequently claimed the lives of three individuals, occurred on November 18 and has since been a subject of extensive investigation and public attention.
Authorities have detained 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez, identifying him as the suspect behind the fatal crash in which he allegedly drove at approximately 100 miles per hour, inflicting carnage and failing to stop at the populated intersection. Witnesses described the scene as so catastrophic it felt akin to an explosion, with the impact reverberating through adjacent structures. Some bystanders even suspected a bomb might have detonated, according to details conveyed in interviews with KTNV at the scene.
In light of the incident, the released body camera footage, albeit edited to scrub the most graphic and sensitive portions, offers a raw glimpse into the immediacy of the police response, which has been made public on the department's YouTube channel and features the officers who were first to arrive at the fatal scene, as per FOX5 Vegas.
The ramifications of this crash led to the deaths of Edward Garcia and 20-year-old Adilene Duran-Ricon, who were initially pronounced dead at the scene, as well as Vanessa Lainez Vasquez, who succumbed to her injuries days later. Furthermore, prosecutors allege that this act was perpetrated intentionally by Gutierrez as a disturbing method to sever his relationship with Duran-Ricon, who was 11 weeks pregnant at the time. This information was sourced from the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, as described in an arrest report noting Gutierrez’s red, watery eyes and the discovery of a THC vape pen on his person, with the narrative pieced together by KTNV.
Gutierrez now faces charges that span open murder and attempted murder, alongside accusations of battery with a deadly weapon according to the District Attorney's public statements, and he is set to reappear in court come Tuesday, Dec. 9th, a date reported by FOX5 Vegas. As investigations continue, the body camera footage stands as a testament to the severity of the event and the ongoing quest for justice for those affected by the tragedy.
