Vehicle thefts in League City have spiked, with thieves targeting newer-model GMC Sierras and Chevy Silverados. Police are urging residents to take extra anti-theft precautions after multiple trucks, including at least seven in one night, were stolen. One high-profile case involved Carolina Mendoza’s father’s fully-loaded GMC Denali, stolen around 3 a.m. in under a minute, captured on a neighbor’s camera. Mendoza said, "He couldn't believe it was happening," and the theft also resulted in the loss of about $25,000 in tools, leaving her father unable to work, according to Click2Houston.
Genoveva Anderson told FOX 26 Houston about her family's struggle after her father discovered his work truck missing early Saturday morning. She said, "To lose all your equipment, everything that you have, and now you have no transportation," describing the impact on her father’s livelihood.
League City police believe the thieves used a device to unlock and start trucks. Tech expert Juan Guevara Torres explained, "The way the crooks do this type of thing, they buy the device, which is legal to buy in the United States" and "and download very specific pieces of software they can either buy or download" to turn it into a remote-control-like gadget.
