A somber Christmas Eve unfolded in Lebanon City as crews battled a significant house fire that damaged three rowhomes and resulted in injuries, fatalities among pets, and multiple displacements. The Lebanon City Fire Department was dispatched to the 200 block of South 5th Street just after 3 p.m., Wednesday, as reported by FOX43. The fire escalated, necessitating a second alarm, with several surrounding departments joining the effort. Ten individuals were displaced by the incident, while one man sustained severe burns, necessitating hospital treatment.
In a situation that gripped the community, CBS 21 reported the fire originated from a second-floor apartment, forcing evacuations within the vicinity. Lebanon City Fire Chief Aaron Sweitzer disclosed that firefighters had to rip through walls and ceilings to combat the blazing inferno, which had engulfed more than one residence. While the injured man's condition remains a concern, the tragic loss of two household cats deepens the toll of this disaster. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire; however, the structural damage has rendered the entire residence uninhabitable, according to a CBS 21 report.
Frightening bangs echoed through the neighborhood, confirmed to be the sound of exploding propane tanks caught in the blaze, as neighbors were hastily evacuated from their homes. WGAL added that one of the afflicted homes was in a state of hoarding, complicating the firefighting efforts. Detailed video from WGAL's Lebanon sky cam captured the heavy smoke and fury of the flames that consumed the buildings' exteriors. "The fire was upgraded from a two-alarm to a three-alarm house fire to get more units on scene," the fire chief told WGAL.
While the community braves the aftermath, the Red Cross was called to the scene to assist two adults and two children impacted by the blaze, as chronicled by FOX43. The support offered by the Red Cross is a beacon of hope amidst the scorched debris and upended lives. Fire departments from Myerstown, Lebanon City, and Annville Cleona were also cited for their response to the emergency, showcasing a collective front against the ravages of the fire.
