Lululemon has quietly pulled back the curtain on a sprawling new flagship in Houston’s Highland Village, tucking an in‑store La La Land Kind Cafe inside more than 9,000 square feet of retail and community space. The Highland Village debut is both a big local footprint for the brand and a homecoming, since Lululemon's original Highland Village boutique opened nearby in 2007 and is now closed. A Thursday preview drew a healthy crowd for DJ sets, limited edition merch and La La Land drinks.
What's inside the Highland Village flagship
The new store sits at 4007 Westheimer and spans more than 9,000 square feet, putting it among Lululemon's larger U.S. locations. For the first time, the retailer has built a full, in‑store La La Land Kind Cafe into the space, alongside a site specific mural by Dallas artist Kyle Steed and high ceilings designed for community programming. A preview party poured matcha lattes and espresso martinis while Houston DJ Mr Rogers spun, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
La La Land Kind Cafe expands in Houston
La La Land Kind Cafe launched in Dallas in 2019 and has grown quickly with a mission centered on kindness and hiring or mentoring foster youth. The concept’s bright, Instagram friendly drinks and signature cups have helped it spread into multiple Texas and California markets. That growth and the brand’s purpose driven pitch are detailed in a company release from PR Newswire.
Corporate backdrop
The opening lands as Lululemon navigates executive change. CEO Calvin McDonald will step down effective Jan. 31 and will serve as a senior adviser through March, as reported by AP. Separately, Reuters reports that activist investor Elliott Management has built a stake exceeding $1 billion in Lululemon and is pressing for leadership changes.
A local homecoming
Highland Village has long been part of Lululemon’s Texas story. The company opened its first Texas boutique there in 2007, and the new flagship now sits just a few doors from that original storefront. The site at 4007 Westheimer is part of a larger redevelopment plan that included demolition and reconstruction work in recent years, according to Community Impact.
Opening deals and what to expect
To mark the launch, La La Land drinks and snacks were half price on opening Friday, and drinks will be half off through Jan. 16 in the Lululemon app, per the Houston Chronicle. The Highland Village cafe is La La Land’s fourth Houston location, and the companies previously teamed up on product drops and a signature drink earlier in 2024, the Chronicle notes.
Why it matters
The Highland Village flagship is part of Lululemon’s broader push toward experiential stores that double as community hubs, a strategy the brand began rolling out around 2019. For Houston shoppers, it means a bigger local footprint, new public art and a coffee counter that encourages people to linger instead of just buy, an evolution Community Impact has tracked in the neighborhood.
