After a protracted battle spanning over a century, the Lumbee Tribe might finally be on the cusp of achieving full federal recognition thanks to legislation included in the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has been at the forefront of this push, championing the Lumbee Fairness Act, which has now passed through the Senate, as reported by Tillis' official Senate website.
"For 137 years, the Lumbee Tribe have been fighting for federal recognition, and today the federal government has finally honored that promise," Tillis stated, crediting former President Trump for pledging to resolve this issue and citing his "extraordinary leadership" on the matter during his tenure; the same tenure which saw the laying of groundwork for today's achievement, albeit among more controversial footsteps of his administration, their efforts have culminated in a victory for the Lumbee people. The act's passage represents a collective effort by North Carolina representatives and Senator Ted Budd, along with chairman Michael Whatley and multiple North Carolina Congressional Delegation members, whom Tillis thanked for their collaboration.
The acknowledgement of the Lumbee Tribe and its members by the federal government is not merely a symbolic gesture – it paves the way for access to federal benefits long denied to them, encompassing health services, education, and a panoply of other rights and resources. It comes as a long-awaited correction, a semblance of justice to a community marginalized, their identity in bureaucratic limbo, not fully seen by the nation's highest structures of power until now.
In expressing his gratitude, Senator Tillis made special mention of his staff, particularly Cirilo Perez, "I want to thank my staff, especially Cirilo Perez, whose tireless and dedicated work behind the scenes played an instrumental role in breaking a decades-old legislative stalemate and making this historic moment a reality" much to the anticipated celebration in Robeson County and across North Carolina, where the Lumbee community has maintained their cultural values and persistently advocated for official acknowledgment despite the long wait. The passage of the NDAA, including the Lumbee Fairness Act, is yet another legislative success achieved collectively, its ramifications to be observed in forthcoming policy implementations and tribal life, according to Tillis' official Senate website.
