A Macomb County man, 30-year-old Jesse Humphrey, has been sentenced to 6–20 years in prison after being convicted of arson and killing animals. He was found guilty of setting a fire at his then-girlfriend's home in Warren, according to ClickOnDetroit.
On September 22, 2024, Humphrey set fire to a home, killing two cats that were inside. He left the scene but was later arrested in Warren. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said, "Today's sentence sends a clear message," noting the seriousness of the crimes, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Humphrey, originally charged with second-degree arson and third-degree animal killing, had his charges increased to first-degree animal killing and torture. The court gave him the maximum sentence, above the recommended 60 to 240 months. He must pay $15,000 in restitution, have no contact with the victim or her family, and has been credited with 438 days already served, as noted by Mlive.
