Commuters in Honolulu are bracing for a new round of construction delays as work is set to begin on a major rehabilitation project along Kapiolani Boulevard, close to Isenberg Street. Starting today, the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Design and Construction will tackle the double box culvert, responsible for channeling water to the Ala Wai canal. According to KHON2, motorists should expect construction activity on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., with the project expected to wrap up in about a year.
The city has outlined that lane closures may occur during the renovation, which includes replacing the top slab of the culvert, repairing cracks, and upgrading the traffic signals and railings. Desiring to minimize disruptions, the construction team will be pausing work from December 22, 2025, through January 2, 2026, as reported by KITV. The phased approach to the construction is aimed at reducing the inconvenience to the residents and the general public.
Aside from the construction noise and disruptions, some bus stops near the worksite will be temporarily relocated. Warning of the potential traffic upheaval, drivers are encouraged by the city to plan for additional travel time. Heavy equipment will be a common sight in the area, as well as signs directing changes to the usual flow of traffic.
Questions and concerns regarding the construction project can be directed to the city's Department of Design and Construction at 808-768-8400. Emphasizing the need for extra caution, cyclists and pedestrians navigating the zone are also advised to follow all traffic controls and heed the signage posted to guide them safely through or around the construction site.
