Yesterday, a spiraled into violence this past weekend in a north Bexar County neighborhood when a man was fatally shot by Bexar County deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call. According to KSAT, Sheriff Javier Salazar reported that a 38-year-old man, allegedly estranged from a woman at the residence, forced entry before being confronted by law enforcement.
The woman, who made the call for help along with her two children, was able to exit the residence and seek safety. The deputies approached the man as he retreated into a makeshift bedroom and, at a dangerously close range of six to eight feet, the man opened fire, striking one deputy in the hip and another in the hand. Both deputies were able to return fire, killing the man, Sheriff Salazar said during a statement as obtained by FOX San Antonio.
While the neighborhood grapples with the shock of such violence, the community is left piecing together the narrative of what led to this fatal encounter. Kyle Stewart, a resident, recounted to KSAT, "I heard the gunshots, too. It was two or three, and then about four," Stewart expressed his disbelief at the escalation, having previously overheard what he deemed 'typical arguments' between the man and woman.
Both injured deputies were taken to University Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. The identities of the deputies, a ten-year veteran and a two-year member of the force, have not been disclosed as the department proceeds with their crime-scene investigation. "Thankfully, the female and two children made it out of the residence just fine," as stated on KSAT.
