The manhunt for 35-year-old suspect James Willis, originally from Dallas, Texas, continues in north Harris County after his escape during a hospital visit. Willis had been arrested on charges of family violence but complained of chest pains, leading to his transfer to a medical facility. Amidst evaluation, a nurse asked for his restraints to be removed, providing him with an opportunity to flee, as reported by CW39.
After bolting from HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, Willis proceeded to hijack an unweaponized carjacking, compelling the driver to take him several blocks before exiting the vehicle. Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct Four stated, "Willis then jumped out and ran off again." An extensive search ensued on Saturday, beginning around 3:40 p.m., featuring drones overhead and canine units combing the area. Officials described Willis as shirtless and wearing blue jeans at the time of his escape.
The persistence of law enforcement agencies was undiminished as the search continued into yesterday, extending beyond Harris County's limits. According to ABC13, Herman mentioned that "teams are continuing the search on Sunday," and there's a belief that Willis may have attempted to return to Dallas, prompting notification of authorities in that region.
Willis, now with additional charges of evading arrest and carjacking compiled upon his previous allegations, remains at large. In a statement obtained by CW39, Constable Herman says, "Willis now faces charges of family violence, evading, and carjacking." The alleged victim of the initial assault has been reported safe, with deputies providing security in the aftermath of these events.
