Traffic along Maryland Parkway hit the brakes Thursday night when a scooter and a vehicle collided near Tropicana Avenue, sending the rider to the hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening. The crash, reported at about 8:30 p.m., briefly slowed traffic while emergency crews moved in, treated the rider, and cleared the scene.
Where It Happened And What Police Said
According to 8 News Now, Las Vegas Metro Police said the scooter and a vehicle collided near the Maryland Parkway and Tropicana intersection. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators while officers blocked lanes, documented the wreck, and picked debris off the roadway. The station reported that the rider was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Maryland Parkway Construction And Traffic Pressures
Maryland Parkway is one of the valley’s busiest north-south corridors and is in the middle of a $378 million bus rapid transit overhaul that has brought lane shifts, new shelters and upgraded intersections. The Las Vegas Review-Journal has followed the project, which officials say will add bus-bike lanes and wider sidewalks intended to improve safety once the work wraps up. Until then, that mix of heavy traffic and temporary work zones can make smaller personal devices tougher for drivers to spot, safety advocates warn.
County Pushes Safety Campaign After Rising E-Device Injuries
Clark County recently rolled out a public outreach campaign with University Medical Center and Metro aimed at cutting e-bike and e-scooter injuries. In a county news release, Clark County officials and UMC pediatric emergency physician Dr. Seth Ball said UMC has already treated nearly 200 device-related patients this year and that injury numbers have climbed sharply. They urged helmets for minors and warned against stunts, noting many of the worst cases did not have to happen. County rules require helmets for minors and allow fines for violations as part of a wider push to keep riders and pedestrians safer on busy streets.
Metro police are still investigating the Maryland Parkway crash, according to 8 News Now. Investigators are reviewing eyewitness accounts and other available evidence while the rider recovers at a local hospital. The incident lands squarely in the middle of the county’s current safety campaign, underscoring officials’ call for both riders and drivers to pay closer attention as e-device traffic grows across the valley.
