An investigation is currently underway following the death of an inmate at Jessup Correctional Institute in Maryland, as confirmed by state officials. The victim, a 23-year-old man named Deon Smith, was pronounced dead by emergency services at the facility. The incident, which is still shrouded in questions, occurred in Building F of the prison complex.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was swiftly brought in to take over the investigation shortly after 8 p.m. last Saturday. They were called in to slowly begin to unravel what had happened by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID). At this stage, another inmate has been marked as a suspect in the incident, although his identity remains withheld pending the filing of charges.
Details about the case are currently sparse, but according to an official statement, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, alongside Crime scene technicians from their Forensic Sciences Division, descended on Jessup to collect evidence.
The matter is expected to remain the focus of intense scrutiny until authorities can piece together the circumstances leading to Smith's demise. Upon completing their investigation, the case will be handed over to the State’s Attorney’s Office in Anne Arundel County for a thorough review. Maryland State Police have assured the public that their probe is active and ongoing, as they continue to gather evidence and testimony in a bid to bring clarity to the situation.
