Mayor Muriel Bowser has appointed Jeffery W. Carroll as the interim Chief of Police for the Metropolitan Police Department, citing his extensive experience and leadership within the department. "I know Chief Carroll is the right person to build on the momentum of the past two years so that we can continue driving down crime across the city," she said, according to the Office of the Mayor.

Chief Carroll joined MPD in 2002 and has held key leadership roles, including Executive Assistant Chief of Specialized Operations and Commander overseeing units like the Canine Unit and Harbor Patrol. Mayor Bowser expressed confidence in his leadership, stating, "We have the best police department in the nation, and I am confident that Chief Carroll will meet this moment for the department and for our city," as reported by the Office of the Mayor.

By 2017, Chief Carroll was Assistant Chief of the Homeland Security Bureau, managing the MPD’s response to events such as presidential inaugurations and state funerals, where he served as Incident Commander. From April to November 2023, he led the Internal Affairs Bureau, overseeing the Internal Affairs Division, Court Liaison, and Risk Management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Towson University, a master’s in Security and Safety Leadership from George Washington University, and has completed programs at the FBI National Academy and the Police Executive Research Forum, as stated by the Office of the Mayor.
