Mesquite Independent School District is preparing to slice $24 million out of its 2026–27 budget, a belt-tightening move that will bring staff layoffs and program changes as the district adjusts to fewer students and higher costs. District leaders say the plan is aimed at balancing next year’s books while keeping classroom instruction and campus safety at the front of the line.
According to CBS News Texas, the district announced the cut plan Tuesday and confirmed it is targeted at the 2026–27 school year. The outlet reported that layoffs will hit both instructional and support staff and that officials pointed to declining enrollment and inflation-fueled operating costs as the key pressures behind the shortfall.
How Mesquite Plans to Carve Up $24 Million
In a detailed budget outline posted online, Mesquite ISD says the school board has directed the superintendent to deliver a balanced 2026–27 budget and notes that “Meeting this expectation requires the district to reduce expenditures by at least $24 million.” The district describes the effort as “right‑sizing” operations to reflect current enrollment while still prioritizing student learning, safety and long‑term success.
Which Jobs and Programs Are on the Line
The district’s budget document splits the $24 million reduction into supply cuts, eliminated positions and consolidated roles. It cites examples such as further reductions to supply budgets and the elimination of 74 lunchroom monitors, 42 bilingual aides, 34 kindergarten aides and about 14.5 campus clerical positions, alongside central-office cuts.
Instructional positions take the biggest hit, accounting for roughly $17.23 million of the total. Mesquite ISD says it will apply new staffing formulas that remove about 103 surplus teaching positions and scale back certain specials rotations. The plan states that “Employees currently holding these positions will be notified by February 13,” according to Mesquite ISD.
Why District Leaders Say They Have Little Choice
District officials cite a steady decline in enrollment combined with rising operating costs that are difficult to absorb in a budget largely driven by payroll. Similar financial pressures have already pushed other Texas school systems to trim spending or consolidate services, as reporting by the Texas Tribune shows, leaving local boards to consider program cuts, staff reductions or tax measures.
What’s Next for Staff and Families
Mesquite ISD says the position eliminations and other changes are scheduled to take effect at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Consolidated roles are expected to be posted internally in the coming weeks as administrators work toward a final 2026–27 budget for board approval.
District officials are urging staff and families to review the detailed budget reduction information and FAQ portal on the district’s website for timelines, process details and contact information.
