A 23-year-old Mexican national, Mario Alberto Almanzan-Mata, was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for illegal reentry into the United States. He previously pleaded guilty on August 28 and has a history of evading law enforcement and engaging in domestic violence, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Almanzan-Mata had been removed from the U.S. twice, most recently on May 27, and was apprehended again on July 7 for illegal reentry. U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton noted his repeated offenses and dangerous behavior, and he is expected to face removal again after serving his prison term, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Almanzan-Mata remains in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. Border Patrol agents investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia handled the prosecution. His sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice effort targeting illegal immigration and criminal cartels, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
