Michigan residents are finally getting a break at the pump as gas prices have significantly fallen, according to recent reports. AAA-The Auto Club Group reported that the average price for regular unleaded gas in Michigan dropped 14 cents from the previous week to $2.82 per gallon. This marks a 33-cent decrease from last month's average and a 13-cent dip compared to this time last year, as stated in a CBS News Detroit article.
The decrease has been widespread across the state, with Metro Detroit experiencing a 7-cent decline, resulting in an average gas price of $2.89 per gallon. According to GasBuddy, a tech company that operates apps and websites based on finding real-time fuel prices, the average in Detroit specifically has decreased by 8 cents just in the last week. In a release shared by The Detroit News, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, mentioned that "Gas prices continued to decline in most states last week, while some price cycling states saw temporary spikes to restore margins." This downward trend is expected to potentially keep prices low into the new year.
Drivers filling up a standard 15-gallon tank can expect to pay about $42 at current prices. The most expensive regional averages reported were in Ann Arbor at $2.96, followed by Metro Detroit and Jackson at $2.89 and $2.84, respectively. The least expensive averages were found in Traverse City at $2.58, with Benton Harbor and Flint both at $2.72, as noted by Detroit Free Press.
AAA's spokesperson Adrienne Woodland pointed out that the drivers are witnessing "the lowest gas prices since October," adding that "With demand declining and gasoline inventories climbing, pump prices may continue to drop." The Energy Information Administration's latest data indicates that US gasoline demand fell from 8.72 million barrels per day to 8.32 million while total domestic gasoline supply increased from 209.9 million barrels to 214.4 million. The BP Whiting, Indiana refinery coming back online post a fire incident, the end of refinery maintenance season, and OPEC ramping up oil production were among the contributing factors mentioned by De Haan for the price drops, as told to The Detroit News.
With the holiday season approaching, these lower gas prices might be an early gift for Michigan motorists, easing travel costs for many planning road trips. As for the national average, GasBuddy reports it is just below $3, at $2.90 per gallon, marking a decrease from recent weeks and casting an optimistic outlook as we inch closer to the end of the year.
