As Michiganders prepare to bid adieu to 2025, they are met with a minor uptick in gas prices. According to AAA, the state has experienced an 8-cent increase from last week, setting the average price for regular unleaded at $2.81 per gallon. This figure is still notably lower compared to prices from the previous month and year, as Detroit News reports. Drivers can expect to spend about $42 to fill a typical 15-gallon tank, which reflects a sizable decrease from the $57 tank fill-ups during the summer of 2024.
"Michigan drivers traveling for the holidays are seeing an increase in prices at the pump," said Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA, in a statement echoed by multiple outlets including FOX 2 Detroit and uppermichiganssource.com. Despite the slight hike, the state average remains beneath the national average, which sits at $2.83 per gallon. The most expensive prices were seen in Jackson ($2.92), Ann Arbor ($2.90), and Lansing ($2.89), whereas the lowest averages were found in Traverse City ($2.55) and Marquette ($2.58).
The regional variations stand out, with Metro Detroit seeing a less significant increase of 1 cent compared to the state's average. There is also notable variation within Upper Michigan, where Delta County offers the lowest average at $2.46 per gallon, and Mackinac County the highest at $3.09, as detailed by uppermichiganssource.com. The fluctuations in prices across the state reflect a complex tapestry of factors influencing the gas market as the year concludes.
