In a move aimed at enhancing public access and promoting digital equity, Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is set to roll out free printing and copying services starting January 5, 2026. The initiative will be available at all branches, with the exception of Noyes Library for Young Children, allowing patrons to print up to 15 black and white pages or two color pages per day without incurring any costs.
Forgoing the need to maintain physical cash to make change for users, MCPL is adapting to not only further their commitment towards equity and access but also to streamline operational efficiency. Additionally, the libraries will begin to freely distribute items like earbuds and flash drives to Montgomery County residents on a limited basis. This change is designed to directly support those for whom printing is not simply a convenience but a necessity, such as job seekers needing to print resumes or students completing assignments.
According to a statement obtained by MCPL's announcement, County Executive Marc Elrich stressed the importance of this service enhancement. "For many residents, printing a resume, a school assignment, or a government form is not optional; it's part of daily life," Elrich said. "By offering free printing services, we're making it easier for people to take care of essential tasks. This is a small change with a real impact, and it reflects our commitment to making County services accessible, equitable, and centered on the needs of the community."
