The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has launched its annual "Booze It & Lose It" campaign, stepping up patrols and checkpoints statewide. The initiative, which runs through January 4, aims to curb impaired driving and minimize the risk of accidents during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. According to a recent NCDOT press release, most construction on interstates, U.S., and state routes will be paused until January 2 to accommodate the increase in traffic.
A heartwarming addition to the NCDOT's announcements was the journey of Santa Claus across the state. Santa has been busy visiting North Carolinians by ferry and train, with stops like Fort Fisher and Southport, where he greeted families and participated in the seasonal festivities, such as Southport’s “Light Up the Night” Christmas Parade. The next day, he was on board NC By Train's Santa Train from Raleigh to Greensboro, engaging with community members and sharing in the holiday spirit.
In a more solemn acknowledgment, the NCDOT has dedicated a bridge on N.C. 11 over Contentnea Creek in Pitt County to the memory of 1st Sgt. T. Lee Howell. Starting as a Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officer in 1994, Howell had a distinguished career with the State Highway Patrol, rising to be the First Sergeant of the Motor Carrier Enforcement Section. His untimely death in January 2021, due to complications from COVID-19, marks a significant loss for the state, honoring his devotion to North Carolina with this dedication.
